PASHA drained the last of his latte just as Daniel was turning onto Main Street. They would be at the diner in less than ten minutes and his stomach was in knots. “I ah… I was wondering about something,” he began. “You said you had a doctor you really liked?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“I know I can go to a clinic to get tested, but it’s been a while since I had a physical, and I thought maybe, if your doctor sees other people—I mean, does she only see HIV patients or will she see anyone?” Heat warmed his cheeks. He wasn’t sure he would ever be comfortable talking about HIV.

“You don’t have a regular doctor?” Daniel asked.

“Yeah, but he’s Dad’s doctor too, and I know all about confidentiality but it just… it would be really weird asking him for an STD test. The last time he saw me, I was fifteen and still a virgin.”

“I’ll text you with Doc Neumann’s number later.”

“Thanks.”

And they’d reached their destination. In the front window, the Open sign was on, and Pasha could see his father moving around in the dining room. Daniel eased the big truck around the corner, into the lot, right to the spot where he’d been parked the first time they met.

“I guess this is where I get out,” Pasha said when they came to a halt. He wasn’t ready to leave. “I had a really good time last night.”

“Me too. I ah—”

Before Daniel could finish what sounded like an awkward good-bye, Pasha leaned over and pressed a long, slow, sensual kiss to his lips.

“Damn,” Daniel swore when they parted, both breathing hard. “I don’t know what I did to deserve that, but if you tell me, I’ll be sure to do it again.”

Pasha smiled. “I told you coffee would help.”

“Guess I’d better get that coffeemaker.”

“Yes. You’d better.”

He shook his head, chuckling softly. But then he sobered. “If anything happens and you need me, call, okay? I’ll be on this side of town for the next couple of hours and I will drop whatever I’m doing—”

“Daniel, I’ll be fine. Thank you for the offer, but I can handle this.”

“Just promise you’ll shoot me a text so I know for sure everything’s okay.”

“I’ll text you as soon as I get settled in.” He leaned over and pressed another soft kiss to Daniel’s lips then grabbed his backpack and hopped out of the truck. “Drive safe.”

“Always,” Daniel promised.

Pasha watched as Daniel pulled out of the lot. Then he turned toward the restaurant. He wasn’t surprised to see Dad waiting for him at the back door. Not just waiting. Watching. Glaring. There was no doubt he’d witnessed their kiss good-bye. But if he didn’t want to see it, he shouldn’t have been watching. Steeling himself as best as he could for whatever was going to happen next, Pasha headed toward the door.

“You’re late,” Ivan snapped.

Pasha bit his tongue on the fact that it was only a few minutes after six and there weren’t any customers anyway. Dad was right.
